Morse and Lewis delve into the enigmatic case surrounding the demise of Laura Poindexter, a distinguished American tourist who was enrolled in an elite tour of Oxford. Her possessions, notably her treasured jewelry, including the Wolvercote Tongue, a relic set to be donated to the Ashmolean Museum, were inexplicably absent. Although the pathologist concluded that she passed away due to natural causes, Morse harbored a suspicion that the circumstances were not as straightforward. The intrigue intensified when Theodore Kemp, an esteemed authority on the Wolvercote Tongue at the Ashmolean, met a tragic end, and Laura's husband vanished without a trace.
