Helen Alving is on the verge of dedicating an orphanage that she has constructed in honor of her late husband, Captain Alving. In a candid revelation to her spiritual guide, Pastor Manders, she discloses the hidden turmoils of her marriage. She has established the orphanage with the intention of dissipating her husband's fortune, ensuring that their son, Oswald, receives no inheritance from him. In the past, Pastor Manders had advised her to reconcile with her husband, despite his infidelities, which she had done, hoping that her unwavering love would ultimately transform him. However, her husband's wandering ways persisted until his demise. Mrs. Alving remained with him until the end, hesitating to depart out of fear of societal ostracism.

As the play unfolds, a harrowing revelation is made: her son Oswald, whom she had sent away to shield him from the corrupting influence of his father, is afflicted with syphilis, a disease inherited from his father. The situation becomes even more poignant when it is revealed that Oswald has fallen in love with Regina Engstrand, the maid of Mrs. Alving, who is, in fact, an illegitimate daughter of Captain Alving and thus Oswald's half-sister.
