Dr. Brewster's demise takes an intriguing turn when the pathologist reveals that the deceased was also bound and gagged. The Brewster family, both of whom are practicing physicians, operate a private clinic. Their son, John, resides at home and is a doctoral candidate in philosophy. One potential suspect emerges in the form of Michael Steppings, who had menacingly threatened the Brewsters and their nurse following his daughter's severe adverse reactions. These reactions led to her becoming vegetative due to a botched operation that transpired two years prior. The forensic laboratory discovers that one of Steppings' threatening missives was tampered with, and Detective Morse learns that Brewster may have engaged in an affair at one point.
