In 1963, within the confines of the fictional Brazilian city of Antares, a workers' strike erupted, a battle cry for enhanced wages and improved working conditions. Concurrently, seven local individuals met their demise: Quitéria Campolargo, a conservative and influential Catholic matriarch (portrayed by Fernanda Montenegro); Cícero Branco, a corrupt lawyer (played by Paulo Betti); Barcelona, a Spanish anarchist shoemaker (Elias Gleizer); Pudim de Cachaca, a debauched alcoholic (Gianfrancesco Guarnieri); Erotildes, a prostitute (Marília Pera); Joao da Paz, a student (Diogo Vilela); and Menandro Olinda, a pianist (Ruy Resende). As their bodies remained uninterred amidst the ongoing strike, the deceased collectively demanded the right to be laid to rest from the local authorities. The Major Vivaldino Brazao (Cláudio Correa e Castro), the Judge Quintiliano do Vale (Carlos Eduardo Dolabella), the so-called "Colonel" Tibério Vacariano (Paulo Goulart), and the local sheriff found themselves unable to compel the workers to resume their regular duties. In the process, the departed citizens revealed the shadowy secrets of corruption that plagued the city's leadership and its inhabitants. Having passed beyond the reach of the living, these corpses were no longer bound by the laws of the living, and they were thus free to speak openly about the grim, hidden truths that lay beneath the surface.
