Samantha Byrd is a towering figure, often clumsy, who is persistently bullied by Judith, a girl with a fair degree of popularity who delights in taunting her with remarks like, "Fly away, Byrd." A woeful basketball player, Samantha is compelled to linger after school for relentless practice sessions.

On a particularly gloomy afternoon following a practice, she encounters a disoriented elderly woman in the woods. Not only does Samantha engage in conversation with this stranger, but she also accompanies her to an unfamiliar location. Overwhelmed by Samantha's benevolence, the grateful old woman grants her three wishes. Samantha's first wish, articulated in an awkward manner, is, "I want to be the strongest player on the basketball team." This bizarre wish results in all the other team members, including Judith, succumbing to the flu. Judith, in a fit of jealousy, accuses Samantha of being a witch, to which Samantha, in a moment of anger, wishes for Judith to simply vanish.

Upon waking the following morning, Samantha discovers herself as the sole inhabitant of the world. After aimlessly wandering, the old woman reappears and confesses her ineptitude with magic, explaining that her attempt to make Judith disappear inadvertently made everyone vanish. The old woman proposes to cancel the wish and offer Samantha a third one. Samantha wishes for the restoration of normalcy and for Judith to perceive her as the most extraordinary person alive.

This wish is promptly fulfilled, and Judith becomes obsessed with the tiniest details of Samantha's life, carrying her books to class, sneaking into her bedroom at night, and waiting outside her house each morning to accompany her to school. After a failed attempt to escape Judith by crashing her bike, Samantha encounters the old woman again, who grants her a fourth wish. Samantha wishes that she had never met the old woman, suggesting instead that it was Judith who should have encountered her.

As Samantha departs the woodland, she glances down to see Judith, smiling, uttering the familiar taunt, "Why don't you fly away, Byrd?" In a twist of fate, Samantha is transformed into a bird.
