Barbara Carey embarks on a journey to Italy to visit her visually impaired sister, Mary Ann, who is pursuing her musical studies at an esteemed academy. Upon her arrival in Rome, Barbara is distraught to learn that her sister has mysteriously vanished. Italian law enforcement suggests a grim possibility—that Mary Ann may have fallen prey to a deranged individual fixated on young, sightless women. With the support of Martin Foster, an official from the British Embassy, Barbara commences a determined search to unravel the mystery surrounding her sister's disappearance. In a desperate bid to draw the culprit out, she dons a disguise, feigning blindness. The trail ultimately leads her to Seagull Island, a secluded estate belonging to the enigmatic British citizen, David Malcolm. Now, Barbara must grapple with a myriad of questions: Was Mary Ann truly abducted? What became of David's wife and son on the island? And why does David's relative, Carol, exhibit such animosity towards the sighted woman accompanying him?
