The White Guardian sounds the alarm about an approaching peril and steers the TARDIS towards what seems to be an Edwardian sailing yacht, the SS Shadow. However, it is revealed to be among a fleet of spacecraft engaged in a galactic race, with Enlightenment as the ultimate prize. The vessel's Captain Striker and his officers are Eternals, who siphon the thoughts and feelings from their enslaved human crew, the Ephemerals, to augment their hollowed lives.

Turlough attempts to evade the Black Guardian's influence by leaping into the void, but is promptly rescued and brought aboard Captain Wrack's vessel – another ship piloted by an Eternal. Two other craft participating in the race are destroyed, and Turlough learns that this calamity has been orchestrated by Wrack, with the assistance of the Black Guardian, who employs a potent beam of mental energy.

The Doctor boards Wrack's ship, identifies its power source, and with Turlough's aid, ejects both Wrack and her second-in-command, Mansell, into the cosmos. Together, they navigate the ship to a port—a luminous crystalline structure suspended in space—thereby securing their victory in the race. The White Guardian extends a share of Enlightenment to Turlough, while the Black Guardian demands that the youth surrender the Doctor in exchange for a massive diamond nestled within a radiant artifact, purportedly the true prize.

Confronted with the ultimate choice, Turlough acts decisively: he sweeps the crystal from the table and hurls it directly towards the Black Guardian, who dissipates in a blaze of fire. Freed from his束缚, Turlough understands that Enlightenment was never a matter of the crystal, but a testament to the power of choice.
