The 1993 FIA Formula One World Championship represented the 47th iteration of the esteemed motor racing series. This exhilarating season kicked off on March 14, 1993, culminating in the 16th race on November 7. Alain Prost triumphantly secured his fourth Drivers' Championship, while the Williams-Renault team maintained their Constructors' Championship, marking their sixth win in the series. A remarkable highlight of the season was the 1993 Spanish Grand Prix, where Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Michael Schumacher shared the podium, a unique occurrence in Formula One history.

The 1993 Formula One calendar welcomed the return of the European Grand Prix, absent for eight years since 1985. This historic event took place at Donington Park, which was the sole venue to host an F1 race. The race was intended to replace the Pacific Grand Prix at the Autopolis circuit in Japan, following the collapse of a racing agreement. The sole departure from the calendar was the Mexican Grand Prix, which moved from the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City after safety concerns regarding the circuit's uneven surface.

This season stood out as a pivotal moment in Formula One history, marking the zenith of electronic technology integration. The year witnessed the construction of perhaps the most advanced and sophisticated Formula One cars to date. The championship-winning Williams-Renault FW15C, for instance, was a marvel of engineering. It featured a highly advanced hydraulically and electronically controlled active suspension, complemented by an array of electronic systems, such as anti-lock brakes, fly-by-wire controls, traction control, a semi-automatic gearbox that could switch to full automatic mode, power steering, and highly sophisticated on-board telemetry. The engine was also equipped with pneumatic valve springs, and an innovative "push to pass" system was introduced to facilitate overtaking for drivers Alain Prost and Damon Hill. This system raised the car's rear at high speeds and increased the engine's RPM by 300, enhancing performance on straights. Williams also tested a continuously variable transmission, but this system was subsequently banned. The Benetton team experimented with a four-wheel steering system towards the end of the season, though it was never raced. Virtually all cars in 1993 were equipped with an active suspension system, which maintained consistent ride height throughout the lap, significantly improving aerodynamic efficiency. Despite being widely considered a non-driver aid, this system and the aforementioned technologies, excluding telemetry and pneumatic valve springs, were banned for the 1994 season.

Upon the conclusion of the season, Alain Prost departed from Williams, retiring from Grand Prix racing. His seat was taken by the title runner-up, Ayrton Senna. Tragically, Senna's career was cut short with a fatal crash early in the following season. The 1993 season thus marked the final victories for these two dominant drivers, who had reigned over Formula One for several years, securing seven of the nine titles from 1985 to 1993. At the British Grand Prix, Prost achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first Formula One driver to win 50 Grands Prix. Despite missing the title, Senna had a memorable season, securing his home race victory, an impressive win at Donington Park, and a record-breaking fifth consecutive Monaco Grand Prix win since 1989. Nevertheless, Prost's Williams maintained its pace advantage from the previous season, and he was fully in control of the title race from mid-season onwards. The year also witnessed Damon Hill's impressive debut in Formula One, as he secured three consecutive victories during his first full season at the age of 33.
