Atlanta, 1873. It is yet another day of sorrow, marked by the solemnity of Melanie's funeral. Scarlett, driven by a resolute desire to reclaim Rhett's affection—whom she finds increasingly entangled with Belle Watling—embarks on a mission. Her first stop is Tara, where a heated exchange with Sue Ellen over the estate awaits her. Next, she ventures to Charleston, presenting herself before Rhett's mother and a circle of friends, to Rhett's chagrin. However, an embarrassing incident involving Ashley catches her off guard, prompting her retreat to Savannah and into the embrace of her mother's family, led by her overbearing grandfather, Robillard. Scarlett also reaches out to her O'Hara kinfolk and encounters her cousin Colum, a priest with a clandestine past as a gunrunner. Guided by these connections, she sets sail for Ireland. There, she encounters the dashing Earl of Fenton, the owner of Ballyhara, the ancestral seat of the O'Haras. After purchasing the estate from him, Scarlett ascends to become the family's head both financially and in matters of faith. Yet, her joy is fleeting, as a series of calamities befall her. It is only through Rhett's unwavering love that she manages to escape the hangman's noose.
