Fran has maintained a cherished pen friendship with Lenny since their first-grade days. Through the exchange of letters, Fran and Lenny have developed an amicable rapport, their correspondence resembling that of a close couple. They had initially agreed to forgo the exchange of photographs, but now, as Lenny prepares to visit New York, he is eager to meet Fran in person. Maxwell, feeling a sense of rivalry with Lenny, is also anxious to meet him. Conversely, Fran is apprehensive about the impending meeting, as she has painted an exaggerated portrait of herself, "Fran Fine," in her correspondence. Nonetheless, she agrees to meet Lenny at the renowned Russian Tea Room, where they will recognize each other by the red roses pinned to their lapels. In the meantime, Maxwell, eager to see Lenny, accompanies Fran to the Russian Tea Room and remains by her side until Lenny arrives. During their wait, Fran and Maxwell enjoy a pleasant, almost companionable "date," so much so that Fran's initial concern about Lenny's appearance begins to wane.
