The 1996 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 50th edition of the FIA Formula One motor racing series. The championship officially got underway on March 10, 1996, culminating in the final race on October 13, spanning a total of sixteen races. The season saw the conferment of two prestigious titles: one for the Drivers and another for the Constructors.

Damon Hill emerged victorious in the Drivers' Championship, achieving this milestone two years post his narrow defeat by Michael Schumacher. This triumph made Hill the first son of a World Champion to claim the title himself; his father, Graham Hill, had won the championship in 1962 and 1968. Hill, who had been a runner-up in the previous two seasons, faced a formidable challenge primarily from his teammate, Jacques Villeneuve, the 1995 IndyCar and Indianapolis 500 champion. Williams-Renault secured the Constructors' title with ease, as no other team could consistently mount a competitive challenge throughout the championship. However, this victory also heralded the beginning of the end for Williams's dominance in the 1990s. It was announced that Hill and designer Adrian Newey would be leaving at the conclusion of the season, along with engine manufacturer Renault, which would also withdraw after 1997.

Michael Schumacher, the two-time defending world champion, had transitioned to Ferrari. Despite numerous reliability issues, the team gradually evolved into a front-running contender by the season's end. The defending Constructors' Champion, Benetton, started to slide down the grid by mid-season, largely due to Schumacher's departure. They were unable to secure a victory, with Olivier Panis claiming the only victory of his career at the Monaco Grand Prix.
