Susan Keene's wedding day was abruptly terminated as she walked away from her fiancé at the altar. It appeared that her aspirations were to become a trophy wife. As a copy editor for The Gate, a publication owned by Jack, her fiancé's brother, she had anticipated her employment being terminated. However, Jack, whose marriage was far from blissful, was so impressed by her that he offered her a column, which he titled "Suddenly Susan."

At The Gate, Susan found herself surrounded by an eccentric ensemble of colleagues; Vicky, a somewhat shrewish individual who believed Susan could have anything she desired due to her stunning beauty; Luis, a Latin photographer with a reputation for charming the ladies; Todd, the music critic, who seemed a bit spacey.

In the second season, Maddy Piper, an investigative reporter who Susan had known and disliked from high school, joined the magazine. Maddy took great pleasure in belittling everyone around her. By the third season, Susan and Jack attempted to explore a romantic relationship. By the fourth season, Jack, Maddy, and Todd had all left the magazine. The Gate was acquired by the domineering Ian Maxtone Graham, who was accompanied by his assistant, Miranda, and Nate, a sports writer. Adding to the mix was Oliver, a friend of Ian's and a freelance photographer, who occasionally visited and caught Susan's attention.
