Alan's wife, Sarah B'Stard, is similarly ethically flexible, indulging in numerous affairs, and has harbored resentment towards her husband since their marriage's inception. She leverages her husband's influence to satisfy her desires. Each episode intertwines contemporary news stories, with Alan adapting to the times, from the dissolution of the Cold War to the pursuit of Nazi war criminals in the late 1980s, and the rise of the Animal Freedom Party. To manage his burgeoning wealth, Alan relocates (in the fourth season) to the European Union, continuing his quest to amass even greater riches and ascend to the pinnacle of power he can attain.
