Max and Antonio are stepbrothers, united by blood but divided by a bitter inheritance dispute. Max harbors a deep resentment towards his stepbrother Antonio, for it was Antonio who inherited their father's vast fortune and business, leaving Max with nothing but a grudge. In a cunning plot to seize Antonio's wealth, Max devises a scheme involving Raquel, a girl of modest origins who resides in the bustling city of Guadalajara with her sister and father.

Max marries Raquel under the guise of Antonio and, on their wedding night, conveniently excuses himself, leaving Raquel with the news that he must depart on a business venture. Returning home, Max sees Antonio off on a business trip, unaware that the plane he boards has been sabotaged by Max himself. When the plane crashes, it is widely assumed that Antonio perished in the disaster. Max plants the marriage license in Antonio's room, and their mother contacts Raquel, informing her of Antonio's demise and urging her to attend the funeral immediately.

Upon arriving at the grand mansion, Raquel is taken aback by the opulence, struggling to believe that she had married a man of modest means. During her stay, Max confronts her, leaving her in shock. He then proceeds to explain that he concocted the entire tale to reclaim what was his by right, painting Antonio as a despicable character. Initially, Raquel suspects that Max had his brother killed, but Max skillfully convinces her otherwise, attributing the tragedy to mere chance. He attempts to persuade her to participate in the charade, but Raquel, with a strong sense of morality, rejects his scheme. Max proposes that they merely need to maintain the lie until the situation dies down, after which he would marry her and provide her with access to the fortune. Initially hesitant, Raquel succumbs to blackmail, as Max threatens to have her father and sister imprisoned if she fails to comply with his plan, pinning the blame for Antonio's death on her.

As time progresses, Raquel comes to understand the malevolent nature of Max and her affection for him fades. Meanwhile, Antonio resurfaces, alive and well. Upon learning that he is to return home to his wife, Antonio is bewildered, certain that he would remember her. However, doctors have assured him that he has suffered from amnesia. Despite their initial surprise, Raquel and the real Antonio gradually fall for each other, much to Max's chagrin, as he harbors genuine feelings for Raquel.
