Morse and Lewis delve into the mysterious demise of Dr. Julian Dear, a distinguished senior fellow at an Oxford college. Tragically, Dear was en route to a debate on the evening of his untimely death, when he was ambushed and subsequently succumbed to a fatal heart attack amidst the chaos of what seemed like a robbery. The College's Master, Matthew Copley-Barnes, stumbled upon a young man crouched over Dear's lifeless form, who then brushed the Master aside as he fled the scene. Morse soon uncovers that Copley-Barnes has been receiving enigmatic packages, and further discovers that the college holds significant investments in Corby International, a prominent bio-agricultural/chemical corporation. These revelations, coupled with the involvement of a renowned journalist, Sylvie Maxton, who is penning an article about the Master, propel Morse into a convoluted web of scientific misinformation and the uncovering of a deeply buried tragedy.
