"Soldier, Soldier" is a captivating narrative that unfolds within the ranks of Company A of the esteemed British regiment, the "King's Fusiliers." The narrative centers on a close-knit community of soldiers and their families within the regiment. At the heart of this story is Sgt. Wilton, who shares his life with Joy. Joy has embraced her role within the military community, meticulously planning activities for the wives and children to prevent them from feeling disconnected from their serving husbands and fathers. Additionally, there's Corporal Garvey, whose longing for a wife leads him to forge a connection with Corporal Nancy Thorpe, a member of the military police. This relationship was destined to face insurmountable challenges from the outset. Both parties are ambitious to rise within the military ranks, yet Garvey yearns for the security and stability of a family, as Sgt. Wilton possesses—a family that includes a wife and children. While Nancy would be content to grant Garvey these blessings, it is not a desire she can entertain while immersed in her rigorous sergeant's training.

The relationship between Fusilier Dave Tucker and his wife Donna is marked by frequent turbulence. Both hailing from Newcastle, they both experienced turbulent childhoods. Tucker enlisted in the army as a means of escape from the poverty that had long haunted them. Ultimately, the army became his sole family. Donna, his wife, was once known for her party lifestyle. Her interest in Tucker was sparked by his display of his army pay, but this romance was one-sided; Tucker was smitten, whereas Donna harbored no similar feelings. From that moment on, she developed a deep disdain for military life. Throughout his tumultuous military career, Tucker struggled to maintain his position within the ranks, while Donna worked tirelessly to convince him to leave. Following her discovery of Tucker with another woman, he faced charges of being absent without leave and was subsequently subjected to a court martial. Initially, Donna was overjoyed at the prospect of him being discharged, but her elation turned to despair when he was sentenced to six months of detention instead of being expelled. Heartbroken, she abandoned him.

After hitchhiking numerous rides back to Newcastle, Donna realized she had nowhere to turn. She returned to the regiment and, with the invaluable assistance of Joy Wilton, began to learn how to adapt. However, the path remained rocky and challenging.

The series is peppered with a cast of wonderfully diverse and compelling characters; some whose stories viewers come to cherish, such as Col. Dan Fortune and Major Tom Cadmean. Conversely, there are others, like Capt. Davison, whose antics will leave viewers with a sense of animosity.
