Steven Parnell, who faced accusations of the heinous murder of several young girls during the preceding summer, met his end while incarcerated and awaiting trial. Morse, who had been absent from the case due to a prolonged leave during the bulk of the investigation, found himself intrigued anew. His interest was piqued by the mystery surrounding one of the victims, Karen Anderson, whose whereabouts remained unknown. Although it was widely speculated that her body had been discarded in a nearby lake, Parnell, on his deathbed, confessed to his priest that he was not the perpetrator of that particular crime.

The subsequent murder of George Daly, a witness in the case, prompted Morse and Lewis to delve deeper into the enigma of Anderson's disappearance. They pondered over the curious absence of Anderson's camera, given her passion for photography. Their investigation led them to encounter a clique of middle-aged men whose peculiar pastime was the taking of so-called glamour photographs.
