In Season 5, Murder, She Wrote's indomitable Jessica Fletcher is back in top-notch detective mode, and her travels take her beyond the familiar confines of Cabot Cove. This expansion is quite beneficial, for at the pace at which the murders have been occurring, the town would be all but depopulated. Some of the series' finest episodes unfold in more far-flung and intriguing settings, such as New York (where a man lies dead on the sidewalk, clad in only one shoe), Montana (where a publishing convention spirals into an unholy mess), and West Virginia (where two whistle-blowers at a coal company are discovered murdered in a shockingly brutal manner). Angela Lansbury brings a dazzling blend of resolve and warmth to her role, truly hitting her stride and then some. Jessica's personal history is also richly detailed, particularly in the episode "The Last Flight of the Dixie Damsel," where an inquiry into a mysterious cargo plane leads her, to her horror, to a connection with her late husband. A further highlight of the series is the delightful appearances by celebrities of a certain era, and this season does not fail to deliver, featuring cameos from Roddy McDowall, Shelley Fabares, and Dinah Shore. Additionally, it showcases emerging talents like Megan Mullally (who proved that the "Will & Grace" drama was all for show) and the future satirist Bill Maher.
