Though derived from the movie, the series diverged from being a direct continuation, instead establishing itself as a depiction of the "real-life" scenarios that the film was inspired by. In the opening episode, Ferris Bueller, played by Schlatter, makes a reference to the film, voicing his dissatisfaction with Matthew Broderick's portrayal of him. His frustration reaches a climax as he takes a chainsaw to a life-sized cardboard standee of Broderick. Much like the film, the series centered on Ferris Bueller's high school escapades, which included navigating his relationship with his sister Jeannie, his loyal friend Cameron, and his romantic interest Sloan.
