Joel Fleishman has recently graduated from medical college, yet his prospects seem to have taken a turn for the worse. Neglecting to scrutinize the fine print of his scholarship terms, he finds himself at a crossroads, forced to relocate to the distant, somewhat quirky town of Cicely, nestled in the untamed Alaskan wilderness. Upon his arrival, he is warmly embraced by the idiosyncratic inhabitants who seem disinclined to part with him, particularly Maurice Minnifield, a retired NASA astronaut. Despite Joel’s steadfast refutations, one cannot help but detect a sense that he relishes the lifestyle in Cicely more than he openly acknowledges.
