The 1981 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 35th iteration of the renowned FIA Formula One motor racing competition. This prestigious event featured the 1981 Formula One World Championship for Drivers, as well as the 1981 Formula One World Championship for Constructors. Both championships were conducted concurrently within a comprehensive fifteen-race calendar that commenced on March 15th and concluded on October 17th. Additionally, Formula One cars were also in action at the 1981 South African Grand Prix, though it was officially categorized as a Formula Libre race and thus did not constitute part of the Formula One World Championship proper.

The 1981 championship served as the maiden FIA Formula One World Championship, supplanting both the erstwhile World Championship of Drivers and the International Cup for Constructors. From this year onwards, teams were mandated to submit entries for the entire championship series, ensuring a consistent and uniform set of regulations across all races. The FIA also assumed the responsibility of determining the prize monies for each event.

In a memorable year, Nelson Piquet triumphed in the Drivers' Championship, securing the first of his three esteemed Drivers' titles. Simultaneously, the Williams team claimed the Constructors' Championship for the second successive year, further solidifying their position as a force to be reckoned with in the world of Formula One.
