In this -far less successful, and consequently shorter-lived- Baywatch spin-off, the steadfast lieutenant, Mitch Buchannon, who oversees the lifeguards at an LA county beach, dons a dual role—often, quite literally, by night, thereby giving rise to the title—of a private detective. He delves into and resolves a myriad of crimes, many of which are in some way tied to his cherished beach and/or the vast ocean (for instance, as a smuggling route, a concealed sanctuary, or a disposal site). Sometimes, he is abetted by a fluctuating ensemble of characters throughout the series, including the youthful lifeguard, Griff Walker.
