The Drivers' Championship was determined under contentious circumstances during the penultimate race of the season held in Japan. A dramatic collision between Prost and his teammate Ayrton Senna, who was imperative to win the race, unfolded in the latter stages. Prost ultimately retired from the competition, whereas Senna managed to rejoin the track following a push-start and crossed the finish line first. However, Senna was disqualified for failing to rejoin the track correctly, which consequently granted Prost the title.
