The 1989 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 43rd iteration of this prestigious motor racing competition. It comprised the 1989 Formula One World Championship for Drivers and the 1989 Formula One World Championship for Constructors, both of which were conducted simultaneously across a rigorous sixteen-race calendar that commenced on 26 March and concluded on 5 November. Alain Prost triumphed in securing his third Drivers' Championship, while McLaren was crowned as the Constructors' Champion.

The Drivers' Championship was determined under contentious circumstances during the penultimate race of the season held in Japan. A dramatic collision between Prost and his teammate Ayrton Senna, who was imperative to win the race, unfolded in the latter stages. Prost ultimately retired from the competition, whereas Senna managed to rejoin the track following a push-start and crossed the finish line first. However, Senna was disqualified for failing to rejoin the track correctly, which consequently granted Prost the title. This victory was Prost's final one with McLaren, as he would go on to join Ferrari for the 1990 season.
