The 1984 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 38th edition of the prestigious FIA Formula One motor racing competition. It encompassed the 1984 Formula One World Championship for Drivers and the 1984 Formula One World Championship for Manufacturers, both of which were fiercely contested concurrently across a grueling sixteen-race calendar that kicked off on March 25th and concluded on October 21st.

In the Drivers' Championship, the season witnessed a thrilling rivalry between McLaren's Alain Prost and Niki Lauda. Prost secured victory in seven races, outpacing Lauda's five wins, including the season's final two races. However, Lauda ultimately triumphed by the narrowest of margins – a mere half a point – which remains the closest finish in Formula One history. This victory was Lauda's third championship title, and his first since 1977. McLaren enjoyed a commanding win in the Manufacturers' Championship, marking their first victory since 1974.

This particular season was notable for featuring the last driver of the 20th century to compete in both the F1 championship and the Indianapolis 500 within the same year. That driver was Italy's Teo Fabi. It would take 33 years for another driver to replicate this remarkable feat, when Fernando Alonso took part in the Indy 500 in 2017.
