The 1997 FIA Formula One World Championship marked the 51st edition of this prestigious motor racing series. The season, spanning from March 9th to October 26th, culminated in a total of seventeen exhilarating races. The Drivers' Championship was ultimately claimed by Jacques Villeneuve, while the Constructors' Championship was bestowed upon the formidable team of Williams-Renault.

The 1997 Formula One calendar introduced two fresh events: the Luxembourg Grand Prix and the Austrian Grand Prix, which made a triumphant return to the circuit after a decade-long hiatus. Notably, the Portuguese Grand Prix, having graced the calendar for 12 years at the Autodromo do Estoril, bid farewell to the racing world.

The championship was enveloped in controversy as the season concluded. Championship leader Michael Schumacher found himself at the center of a maelstrom after he deliberately collided with Villeneuve during the final round at the European Grand Prix in Jerez, Spain, in an attempt to secure his lead. Schumacher came to a stop in the gravel trap, and the FIA deemed him responsible for the accident, penalizing him by stripping him of his second-place standing in the championship. Despite the contact, Villeneuve finished the race in third place. Schumacher maintained his record of five race victories. Although Villeneuve triumphed in seven races, he never again captured the title of Formula One Grand Prix winner before his retirement in 2006.

In 1997, we also witnessed the retirement of the esteemed Gerhard Berger, who had graced the sport for many years. The season also brought the first race victories for the prodigious talents Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Mika Häkkinen, marking the beginning of their illustrious Formula One careers.
